It was lovely to have the sun out this week for our Junior Athletics Day! Of course it was run as precisely as ever by Mr Kloppers in his last event before he leaves us at the end of the year.
As well as saying goodbye to Mr Kloppers at the end of this year, we will also farewell some other long-standing staff members:
Mrs Jocelyn Woolley has been a learning support assistant at Glendowie for 26 years. During this time she has done a wonderful job of working with small groups of students, helping with special learning programmes and has also kept our resources in order.
Mrs Lijun Guan has been a part-time teacher of Mandarin at Glendowie for the last 8 years. We have appreciated her enthusiasm and her great knowledge of Chinese language and culture. Mrs Guan will be moving to a school closer to her home.
Mr Rob Edmondson returned to our school as a teacher this year, but will now take up a new role at another local school. We’ve appreciated his knowledge of the IB Exhibition in Year 6.
We wish all three well for the future.
We’ve received several messages from parents concerned about sunburn at school. We do have sunscreen onsite and in classrooms and we aim to ensure that all students are protected before going out in the sun for prolonged periods of time. We also enforce our policy regarding always wearing hats in term 4 and term 1.
I’m sure you can all appreciate how difficult it is for one teacher to make sure a whole class of students has covered every bit of exposed skin. If you know there is a special event at school where students will be outside for a few hours or more, please support us by applying sunscreen before the students leave home in the morning. It’s also helpful if students can bring their own sunscreen.
A reminder that our school provides 1:1 Chromebooks for all students in Years 5–8 to support their learning. As part of our digital citizenship programme, students are expected to look after these school-owned devices with care.
Please note that we prefer that students do not bring their own devices to school, as all required digital learning is supported through our school-managed Chromebooks.
Chromebooks remain at school and are plugged in to charge each night. Students can still access their school Google accounts from home for homework and learning activities using any internet-connected device.

Glendowie School’s annual food drive
Tuesday 16th December (last day)
Students can wear their own clothes on the last day of the term, our 'Be yourself day' (Uniform Free Day), and bring in non-perishable food items to support the food bank at our local marae in Glen Innes.
Please contact the office if you can help with the collection before school and with the delivery of the collected food on Friday morning.

We have a parent who is interested in starting up a walking school bus route in the mornings, from the corner of West Tamaki Road and Roberta Avenue. She is keen to hear from others who would be keen to support this initiative. Please email her directly: tina.f.hopper@gmail.com
A walking school bus is a group of children who walk to school in a structured, supervised group, similar to a carpool but on foot. Led by adult volunteers who act as "drivers," children are picked up and dropped off at designated "bus stops" along a set route.

Year 7 Science
In science this term, the Year 7s have been looking at the scientific method. We carried out four separate experiments and became familiar with terms like ‘variables’ and ‘fair test’. Next, the students each picked an experiment and chose a different aspect to explore. They wrote a new aim, prediction and method for their new experiment and then independently carried them out. Their findings were presented in a poster format.
