Newsletter T4W4
31 October 2025
We are in the process of releasing several new uniform items, most of which are additional to what we already have. In the next few weeks we will be sending out a special newsletter that will outline what these uniform options will be. In the meantime we ask parents of current Year 6 students not to purchase the intermediate polo as this is an item that is being updated ahead of the next school year.

2026 Class Placements and Move Up Day
We are currently making the arrangements for class placements in 2026. In the next few weeks teachers will ask students to compile a list of three students they work well with or who they are friends with. These will then be considered by the teachers when finalising class placements, along with other factors such as academic achievement levels, gender, ethnicity etc.
Class placements will be announced towards the end of the year so that we can have a ‘move up day’ where students will visit their 2026 teacher with their new class before school finishes. We believe that this supports a smoother transition, particularly for those who struggle with change.
Move Up Day will be Monday of Week 11. On that day all students will have a 30 minute visit to their new classroom to meet their teacher and classmates for 2026. During the visit, teachers will tell a little about themselves, students will share something about themselves and, if there is time, the class will play a game to get to know each other. The teacher will give each student an information sheet introducing themselves to parents and welcoming their child to their class. The letter will also be emailed to parents after 3pm, just in case it does not make it to the school bag! We are not able to share class lists with parents due to privacy, but the children will be able to recognise at least one friend from their friendship list when they visit with their new class.
We kindly request that you do not contact your child’s teacher to ask for certain teachers or friends.

Parents’ Association Guest Speaker
The Parents’ Association hosted a wonderful event with Jo Robertson last week. Many parents came out to hear about How to Have Tricky Chats (with your kids). Unfortunately, I wasn’t well that evening and missed hearing the presentation but have received lots of positive feedback. A huge thanks to our PA who continue to arrange great events that enhance the community life of our school.
Just a reminder that the Glendowie Presbyterian Church carpark is available for pick-up and drop-off only. Please do not park your car and leave it there to walk down to school.

Please note the following information about the Measles outbreak in New Zealand:
-
Measles is circulating and is very contagious. There is now measles in Northland, Auckland, Manawatu, Nelson and Wellington, and we expect further cases across New Zealand.
-
Watch out for symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash:
-
Anyone with measles symptoms must stay at home and should seek urgent advice by ringing their doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116.
-
Anyone who is closely exposed to a measles case must stay at home. Heath New Zealand will provide individuals with advice on a case-by-case basis (including when they can leave quarantine at home).
-
Health New Zealand is actively working with the schools that currently have measles cases.
-
People are considered immune to measles after having two doses of a measles vaccine from 12 months or older, or if you have had measles before. For more information on measles immunity visit:
-
Encourage families and whānau to check their own and their child/childrens’ immunisation status through My Health Record:
-
Anyone born between 1969 and 2004 may have only received one vaccine dose and might not be fully protected. It’s safe to get extra doses. A free vaccine can be booked online or via the Vaccination Helpline on 0800 28 29 26.

Year 8 Week Without Walls 2025
During our time in week 9 in Term 3, the year 8’s from our school were given an opportunity called ‘Week Without Walls’ to travel and experience a different area in New Zealand or a country for the week. Each of the students had the option of travelling to Mt Ruapehu on a hiking trip, staying in Taupo and Rotorua, flying to Cairns, Australia, or travelling to Beijing, China + Hong Kong.
Throughout this time, we had the opportunity to learn more about each other, experience various places, and participate in multiple activities. During the Cairns, Australia trip we went swimming with all sorts of animals in the Great Barrier Reef and got to hold and touch animals at Hartley’s Crocodile Farm. Whilst on the China trip people got to go to the Great Wall of China and visit the Temple of Heaven. Finally the Rotorua trip got to visit the Waitomo Caves and Wai o Tapu Geothermal Pools, while the Mt Ruapehu hiking trip stayed at many cabins along the way.
This was an incredible experience for all the students, and we would all love to do it again. Also a massive thank you to all the teachers and parents who came along to this trip and helped organise it; Mrs Keyser, Mrs Fowler, Mr Kloppers, Miss Cable, Mr Ganley, Mrs Hurdley, Mr Liu, Rose Phillips, and Dr Crowhurst.

Year 6 Exhibition
Year 6 has recently completed our PYP Exhibition for 2025. This involved students working collaboratively to plan independent inquiries that allowed them to inquire into topics they were interested in, while thinking of how to share this learning with the school and our parents, whilst taking action within our local community.
On October 21st and 22nd the school hall was a buzz with all of our year 6 students sharing their learning. Over the two days every class in the school visited the hall to share in the year 6s learning, as well as the year 6 parents taking time to visit too!
This showcase was the finale to nearly 8 weeks of learning. Whilst the students had the support of their teachers, and mentor teachers from other areas of the school, through this process it was the students leading the learning. The topics they chose to inquire into, the level of dedication they demonstrated and the calibre of the presentations on the day impressed everyone that was able to visit the exhibition or was involved throughout the process.
After the excitement of presenting to the school, the students reflected on their experiences, how their learning management, collaboration skills, and understanding of the central ideas they wrote. One of the most important reflections they did was recording what they were most proud of from this experience. Here are some of the answers our year 6s wrote:
- Being confident to present to an audience including students older than me.
- Making it through and having a successful action.
- Having lots of people come to hear about what we had been learning about
- Finishing everything on time!
- How much information we collected on our topic
- How great our final presentation looked!
- Creating a survey that helped us collect information
- I’m most happy with the survey because we have lots of people do our survey
- Overcoming my fear of the Year 7 and 8 students because I thought they would eat me alive
- Talking to people older than me and volunteering at an op shop
- Overcoming our challenges and not giving up
