Newsletter T1W4
27 February 2026
This year has seen one of the more settled starts to a school year that I can remember. I think this can be largely attributed to the milder than normal February weather.
Parent Teacher Interviews
The first of our Parent Teacher Interview sessions will be held on Wednesday 1st April. School will close at 1.40pm to allow this to happen. Information about the online booking system will be included in the next newsletter.
A reminder that wearing a school hat is compulsory in terms 1 and 4. We also request that students bring sunblock to school with them for use throughout the day. All classes also have spare sunblock available for use at school if needed.
Requests for voluntary donations for the year have now been loaded onto Kindo. These remain at the same rate that we have had since 2015 - $400 for one student, $740 for two students, $950 for three students and $1,150 for four or more students from the same family.
The voluntary donation is used to enable us to provide additional resources, staffing and facilities which we aren't able to afford with the funding we receive from the Government. They allow us to have smaller class sizes and to employ additional specialist teachers and Learning Support Assistants to help in the classrooms. Quality resources and facilities, and the maintenance of these, are also possible because of your donations.
We really appreciate any donation you are able to make, whether it be in a lump sum or by weekly or monthly instalments. If you prefer not to pay through Kindo, you can pay cash or eftpos at the school office, or direct to our bank account (12-3027-0305676-00). Payments of the voluntary donation are eligible for 1/3 tax rebate from the IRD.
Our preferred method for payment of school donations and for trips etc is via Kindo. The
Parents' Association also uses Kindo for many of their events. Most of our families have
already signed up for this, but if you haven't done so already you can sign up on kindo.co.nz.
Please contact the school office if you're not sure about anything.

The school will again be supporting students to attend AIMs Games in 2026. AIMs is an awesome event attended by over 10,000 student athletes from around the country and overseas. We have steadily been building our participation in this event over the past three years and in 2024 Glendowie School won our first two medals. For a student to attend this event they must be managed by a parent. If your child is interested in attending the annual AIMS games in Tauranga please have a look on the AIMS games website for information.
Contact Miss Murray (heidim@glendowie.school.nz)to express your interest.
The current government is very enthusiastic about reshaping our education system. The Ministry of Education has now produced a website for parents about the various changes. It is a good place to go to find out more about what the intended changes are.

The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 17th March, from 6.30pm in the boardroom. Anyone is welcome to attend and a copy of the agenda is available from the school office from 3pm on the Friday before the meeting.
A reminder that we hold sample stock of all uniform items in the office, so if you are unsure of sizing please pop in with your child to try them on. Our supplier has noticed that a number of hoodies have had to be exchanged because they are a smaller and slimmer fit than the fleeces we have - he recommends that if you can't try on a sample first, then maybe purchase a couple of sizes above what you normally would.

Year 5: Where We Are in Place and Time
This term, Year 5 students are inquiring into our local history through the Central Idea: “Understanding how historical events shape our personal and local identity.”
To begin the unit, students built boats and 'landed' them at Glendowie landmarks around the school pool. This experience helped them explore causation, reflecting on why people first settled in our local area. We are now researching the diverse histories and values of sites such as Bastion Point, Ōkahu Bay, Tāhuna Tōrea, Ōmaru Creek, Taurere, and Churchill Park.
It is wonderful to see our students becoming such active inquirers into the stories that connect us to the land.

Year 3: Who We Are
In Year 3 we have had a fantastic start to the year! We have kicked off the term with our Who We Are unit of inquiry where we have been exploring the central idea of: Taking responsibility for our actions helps to keep ourselves and others safe.
Each class has set up a class treaty and all of the students have contributed their ideas to come up with rules to follow in order to keep everyone safe and happy in the classroom and in the playground.
The students have also come up with some interesting wonderings around the learner profile attributes on how to be balanced and principled as well as reflecting on their own emotions and feelings within the zones of regulation.
Here are some of our wonderings:
How do we make other people happy and safe? - Leo
How do we be balanced? How do we be safe on the chromebooks? - Layla
How do you switch feelings? - Oliver
How do we become one feeling when we are feeling all of the feelings? - Zoe
We will be revisiting this unit of inquiry at the end of the year so it will be great to see how far we have come in how we are taking responsibility for our actions!
