We had an amazing day out at Glover Park earlier this week for the annual Year 5-8 Athletics Sports. A massive thanks to the parents who came and helped on the day, and of course our staff, led by Mr Kloppers, who did a wonderful job of running the various disciplines.

MYP and Week Without Walls 2024 Information – Tuesday 5th December
We have two important meetings coming up in Week 9. The first is a more indepth information session on the new MYP Programme that we will be running for our intermediate students next year. The second is an information session for Week Without Walls, the education outside the classroom initiative that was run for the first time this year.
The MYP information session is for the parents of current Year 6 and 7 students, who will have intermediate students in 2024. The Week Without Walls session is for parents of current Year 7 students only.
MYP Information Session - 5.30 till 6.30pm
Week Without Walls Information Session - 6.30 till 7pm.
Location: Minihall, Glendowie School
Last year we trialled a new system to transition students to their new room and teacher for 2023. This worked very well and we received some very positive feedback, so we will be doing the same thing this year.
Teachers have asked students to compile a list of students they work well with, are friends with, and also those who they don't work well with. These will then be considered by the teachers when finalising class placements, along with other factors such as academic achievement levels, gender, ethnicity etc.
Class placements will be announced towards the end of the year so that we can have a ‘move up day’ where students will visit their 2024 teacher with their new class before school finishes. We believe that this supports a smoother transition, particularly for those who struggle with change.
On the move up day all students will have a 30 minute visit to their new classroom to meet their teacher and classmates for 2024. We hope to be able to include new teaching staff in this process, if possible, so everyone can meet their new teacher. During the visit, teachers will tell a little about themselves, students will share something about themselves and, if there is time, the class will play a game to get to know each other. The teacher will give each student an information sheet introducing themselves to parents and welcoming their child to their class. The letter will also be emailed to parents after 3pm, just in case it does not make it to the school bag! We are not able to share class lists with parents due to privacy, but the children will be able to recognise at least one friend from their friendship list when they visit with their new class.

Scooters
Mr Kloppers and Mr Clarke kindly keep safe any scooters or bikes left at school. Currently, there are 5 unclaimed scooters that have been left behind and not collected by their owners. They are located in the hallway outside the mini-hall kitchen. Please check to see if one of them is yours.

Year 3 - Sharing the Planet
Year 3 have been inquiring into the central idea, ‘changes in habitats can affect the animals that live there’. Students have conducted research into a wide variety of animals and their habitats, and published information reports. The students are developing their understanding of academic integrity, ensuring their writing is in their own words and acknowledging the source of the information. They are knowledgeable, engaging with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.

The Emperor Penguin by Jace, Room 1
Diet: Penguins like to eat fish. They dive in really quickly and catch the fish. They also eat shrimp and squid.
Appearance: The emperor penguin is 1.2m high and long. It weighs 23 kg.
Interesting facts: Penguins like to bounce over rocks for fun.
Polar habitat: The temperature is very cold. There is snow everywhere. There are mountains and icebergs. The ozone layer is breaking, consequently it is getting too hot and the ice is melting. The reason why the ozone layer is cracking is because there is too much carbon dioxide in the air. The carbon dioxide comes from people’s breath and pollution. Normally, the trees transform the carbon dioxide into air but they are getting cut down, therefore the air is not getting cleaned.
Effect of the habitat’s changes on the animal: The sun is getting stronger, which means that the polar ice caps are melting. Hence, the emperor penguins don’t have any more place to live. They have to swim in the ocean all the time and might get eaten by sharks or other predators.
What can we do to solve this problem? We could stop polluting and stop people from cutting down trees.

The Verdin by Ava, Room 2
The verdin is the only bird in the genus Auriparus. They eat flowering shrubs. Verdins live for 3 years but one has lived up to 5 years and 7 months. The verdin is 11cm tall. They live in Mexico and the deserts in the United States. Their predators are desert hawks and snakes. Females make the sound, ‘gee-gee-gee’. The verdin’s song is a two or three note whistle.
