3 November 2023

From the Principal

Hello everyone,
Firstly, congratulations to all the South African supporters who saw their team win the World Cup last weekend.

Tech Block Progress
You can all see that our tech block is progressing well. I am really happy to inform you that it is still on track to be completed before the end of year. Post-construction we will need to spend a considerable amount of money on fitting out the hard materials and kitchen areas. In this respect, we are so fortunate to have an active PA who supported us this year with a $25,000 donation, as they did last year. This money will go toward the list of resources that need to be added to the tech space in early 2024.

Changes in Education
One of the things people are wondering about with a new government on the way is: what changes will we see in education? And, more specifically, how will this impact what happens at school? The most straightforward answer is that we don’t exactly know until coalition parties sit down and work the details out.

National have campaigned to require teaching of an hour a day for reading, writing and maths. This is unlikely to faze most schools where teaching maths for nearly an hour a day is quite normal, as it is for reading and writing (if you include the literacy and numeracy components in all curriculum areas). Act have ideas around standardised testing and the publication of results. I worry a little about the incentives this will create, but I don’t think we need to get carried away until details are released.

In the meantime, as I’ve said before, we will continue to do what we do by continuing to develop our high quality IB Curriculum.

Climbing Trees
Just a reminder that there is no tree climbing after school. Recently we have had a few nasty falls from children who over extended themselves. Of course adventuring in nature is part of a healthy childhood. However, as a school we have responsibilities related to our school site and we are required to provide supervision when students are engaged in more risky activities.

Parking
Please be informed that you cannot park in the Glendowie Christian Kindergarten carpark for school pick ups or drop offs. There is a very clear and obvious sign that states this.

Also, while I’m providing parking reminders, please do not park in the Dove House carpark. Dove House is a hospice. For obvious reasons taking up parking places there is highly inappropriate.

Enjoy the weekend!!!!

Board Meeting

The next Board meeting will be Tuesday 28 November at 7pm in the Boardroom. Anyone is welcome to attend and a copy of the agenda is available from the school office after 3pm on the Friday before.

Year 1 writing

The students in Room 10 have been building their writing stamina and literacy skills. We planned using a story mountain, discussed our main character and setting, then mind mapped some WOW words (adjectives) to give more detail for the reader. How hard working they are! We hope you enjoy their stories.
