Newsletter T1W2

9 February 2024

From The Principal

Kia ora tatou katoa,

Greetings and a Happy Lunar New Year!

The year has started well. There is a very good feel around the school. We have added three new classes in 2024 (Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4). This is in part due to some roll growth but also because to bring class sizes down.

Meet the Teacher Evening
Our Meet the Teacher Evening will be held on Wednesday 21st February. This is a chance for you to meet your child's teacher in the classroom setting. We are also taking the opportunity to hold a couple of other key parent meetings on that evening. We will have a parent forum where we will introduce the school leadership as well as our part-time teaching staff and we will have the Year 7 Camp meeting.

As part of the parent forum we will spend a short time addressing issues or questions of interest to the wider parent community. If you have a question that you believe would be of interest to the wider parent community then please email this question to office@glendowie.school.nz with the subject “Parent Forum Question”.

Please see the schedule for the evening outlined below.
Staff News
Some of you will have noticed we have a few new staff around the school.

Many of you will have already met our new Office Assistant, Mrs Renee Moyes. Renee has two children at our school and has recently worked in administration at a local school, so she is very familiar with the Glendowie community. We are very pleased to have her as another welcoming face in the school office.

We have several new full-time classroom teachers, this year - welcome to:
Mrs Rose Bain, Room 3
Mrs Hazel Fowler, Room 4
Mr Sean Lee, Room 5
Mrs Katie Kingstone, Room 7
Mrs Rachel O'Connor, Room 15

Ms Heidi Murray, Room 24 has joined us as a student-teacher in 2024. Ms Murray is experienced at working in schools and holds a Bachelor of Physical Education. She is part of a new teacher education pilot being run at Glendowie School, Diocesean Girls School and St Cuthbert's College. Ms Murray will be onsite for most of the year.

Welcome also to the following teachers who will be providing release or working in the senior school:
Mr Mark Stevenson
Mrs Amber Peters
Miss Sandra Xia

Mrs Nikki Mackay has taken on a new role this year as Assistant Principal and Kahui Ako Across School Leader.

Mr Jeremy Shroff will be working one day per week as a student counsellor.

Mr Alan McInally and Ms Carla Heard have not returned to Glendowie this year - we wish them well in their new roles.

Friendly Reminders

Uniform Reminder:
Just a few reminders about Glendowie School uniform.
  • Please name all items to minimise the amount of lost property that accumulates each term.
  • Named items, if found, are returned to the classroom. Unnamed items are stored for a period of time in baskets in the office.
  • Only the school uniform is to be worn to and from school. Students must change out of their sports uniform before leaving the grounds. This is waived if a student is attending a sports tournament.
  • The wearing of school hats during breaks and for PE is compulsory in term 1 & 4.
  • Shoes must be plain and all black. No logos or soles in white or other colours are acceptable. No crocs / jandals / slides allowed.
  • Socks must be plain black or navy blue.
  • Shoes are worn to and from school.
  • Vests or shirts worn underneath the school uniform must not be visible at any time.
  • Sports uniforms are only required from Year 3 upwards.
  • Plain hair bands, clips, hair ties and ribbons etc must be in school colours
  • Earrings must be small and plain - studs or small hoops only
  • No jewellery such as bangles, anklets, bracelets or necklaces to be worn. An item of jewellery of cultural or religious significance, is permitted but must not be visible. Such as on a necklace with a long chain, tucked underneath the shirt. If the item must remain visible or cannot be concealed by clothing, the Principal must give approval.
Wait on the courts before 8.30
Parents and students must wait on the courts if you arrive before 8.30. This allows teachers to prepare for the day without distractions. Please do not wait in walkways, such as in the tunnel.
There will be a bell at 8:50am that indicates the start of the day for Year 7 & 8. Year 1-6 can head to their classroom.
The junior playground area is not open until after the 8:30am bell. Scooters and bikes may be put away for the day prior to 8:30am but students must return to the court area to wait for the first bell. Shelter can be sought only on wet mornings in the tunnel.

Litterless lunches
Glendowie School encourages litterless lunches to minimise rubbish in the grounds. Please use named reusable containers if possible. All packaging, wrappers and plastics will be sent home in your child's lunch box each day as well as food scraps. We also ask that treats such as lollies, sweets and chocolate are not brought to school.

Board Meeting
The next Board meeting will be on Tuesday 13th February, from 7pm in the boardroom. Anyone is welcome and a copy of the agenda is available from the school office after 3pm on the Friday before the meeting.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Glendowie School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School. We implement 2 of the IB programmes. We are authorised to teach The Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Years 0- 6. We have introduced the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Years 7 & 8 this year, and are working towards authorisation. The New Zealand Curriculum underpins both programmes.
We strive to achieve outcomes that ultimately lead to the realisation of the IB Mission.

The IB develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through education that builds intercultural understanding and respect.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a transdisciplinary curriculum framework that offers authentic learning experiences. Students learn to appreciate knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and personal attributes through the learner profile as a connected whole.
The programme of inquiry is organised and framed by six transdisciplinary themes:
  • Who we are.
  • Where we are in place and time.
  • How we express ourselves.
  • How the world works.
  • How we organise ourselves.
  • Sharing the planet.
These transdisciplinary themes together provide children with authentic learning experiences that are not confined to the boundaries of traditional subjects. Although subjects play an important role in learning, PYP learners explore real-world problems by going beyond subject boundaries. Students have opportunities to reflect on the significance of their learning to take meaningful action in their community and the wider world.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a learning framework that nurtures students to become creative, critical, and reflective thinkers. Emphasizing intellectual challenge, it encourages students to link their studies in traditional subjects with real-world contexts. The MYP cultivates skills for effective communication, intercultural understanding, and global engagement, essential for future global leaders. At Glendowie School, students participate in Year 1 and Year 2 of this five-year programme.

The MYP curriculum framework consists of eight subject groups, each taught by specialist teachers. Our Year 7 & 8 students will already have a solid foundation in the MYP from their previous PYP learning experience. The IB language and learning philosophy remain consistent, providing a seamless transition for students.

We look forward to sharing our learning in the PYP and MYP in newsletters throughout the year.
