Event information:
MYP Information Session - 5.30 till 6.30pm (for parents of current Year 6 and 7 students)

Location: Minihall, Glendowie School

Staff Changes
As the year draws to a close, we will farewell four teachers who are moving on from our school - Mrs Britta Schwabe (Year 6), Miss Hayley Donald (Year 2), Miss Chae-Yeon Park (Year 8) and Mr Ben Nakajima (Montessori).

Mrs Schwabe has had a long association at our school, originally as the teacher of German, but also as a regular reliever for both long and short terms. She has been offered a Syndicate Leader position at another local school. Miss Donald started at our school this year but has purchased a home outside of the area and will be moving to a school which doesn't entail such a big daily commute. Miss Park was also new to us this year, but will be moving to Korea for up to a year before returning to take up a position outside of the teaching profession. Ben has now completed his fixed term employment which supported the Montessori unit, but we hope to see him back as a reliever at times.

We thank them all for the huge commitment they have made to our students, school and community and wish them well for the future.

Thanks also to Mrs Bry Minton, Learning Support Assistant, who is leaving us to take up a teaching position at another school. Congratulations Bry on becoming a qualified teacher and we wish you well with your teaching career. We have really appreciated your work with our students this year. We also say goodbye to Mrs Adie Pedersen from our front office. Adie is leaving to join the realm of the retired. We wish her well spending more time out on the water, which is one of her passions. We will miss her efficiency in the front office.

We look forward to welcoming Mrs Rose Bain and Mrs Katie Kingstone who are experienced teachers who will be new to our school, as well as welcoming back Mrs Hazel Fowler and Mrs Amber Payne, former Glendowie teachers who are returning next year.

Congratulations to the following staff members who will be taking on leadership roles in 2024 - Mrs Nikki Mackay will be the Assistant Principal/Across School Leader and Mrs Naomi Bensted who will be Acting Syndicate Leader for Year 3 and 4 next year. Mr Logan Ganley has been the acting Dean of Intermediate this year, but will now take on this role permanently.

Mr Jeremy Shroff has resigned as classroom teacher following his study leave this year, but we are thrilled that he will be working with us one day per week as a counsellor. This is a new initiative for our school and we envisage that this will add a lot of value to the support we are able to offer our students.

2024 Class Placements
We will again be holding our Move Up Day on Monday 11th December. This day was very successful last year, as it gave many of our students the chance to become more comfortable with the teacher and environment they would be entering into the following year. Just to be clear, Move Up Day is not a whole day. It is just a short period before lunchtime where teachers meet the classes for the following year.

End of the Year Ups and Downs
The festive season is upon us! This of course means the pace of life will be drastically ramped up in the lead up to Christmas. At which point we will all crash and ease into the summer after eating way too much on Christmas Day. This of course is the way we do things in New Zealand, and I’m not sure this will ever change. I think we just need to be mindful of the impact the pace of life and the change of season has on us all, especially our kids. Tensions do run a little higher than usual at school and at home. So it is important to be mindful that everyone is a little tired and more likely to react to situations in ways that are not necessarily constructive. My answer to this time of year is twofold – 1 - patience and 2 - reminding our kids of the high standards we expect. I’m sure you’ll agree these are two things that we can encourage at both school and at home over the next few weeks.

Year 5 and 6 Bays and Remuera Literacy Quiz 2023

On Friday the 17th of November 2 teams from Glendowie school (Stella H, Xavier D, Orla K, Eloise W, Alex F, Izzy D, Luke S, Vianna C) went to the year 5 and 6 Eastern Bays and Remuera Literacy Quiz 2023 we were driven by two amazing parent helpers. We were all so thrilled to show everyone how hard we had been working this year reading books and working with Miss Moyle to remember details. We had read 13 books each over the past 2 terms and every book was written by a New Zealand author.

When we arrived there were so many schools, all from the Remuera and Bay Suburbs area. We took a seat at two different tables one for team A and another for team B. There were seven rounds in total each with 6 questions and 2 quotes to identify. After an intense first half we had a quick break we went right back to it.

In the second half we listened to another series of questions about numerous books. Then they announced the winners. In third was Mount Carmel. in second place it was a tie between a Kohimarama team and Mount Carmel team and first place was a team from Victoria Ave School. These teams all worked so hard and deserved to win.

Turns out we did really well. Glendowie A got 17 points and Glendowie B got 27 points, both out of a total of 56 points.

Y4 - How we organise ourselves

Foodbank Drive
Glendowie School would love to support our local community this Christmas. Please donate any tinned goods (cans) or non-perishable food to school on Thursday 14th December or Friday 15th December.
As part of their UOI: People give service in different ways and for a variety of reasons, some of our Year 4 students will be collecting these food items on the school courts before school starts on the last two days of school.
All food collected will be donated to Ruapotaka Marae and the Glen Innes Foodbank and will be distributed to families in need this Christmas. Thank you for you support. See the flyer at the end of the newsletter.
Toy Collection
If you have any new or near new toys (clean and in excellent condition) that your children no longer use, then the Year 4 students will be running a Toy Collection. They will be collecting these on the courts on Thursday 14th December and Friday 15th December before school on the courts. All donations will be given to the Women's Refuge. Thank you for your support.
