From The Principal
Thank you all for a great first term of 2023. We are looking forward to welcoming Mr Charles Liu next term as Deputy Principal. Charles will oversee the senior school (Years five to eight) in both pastoral care and curriculum. He will also take the lead with school wide administration (timetables and general organisation). Mr Liu is well known to many of you having taught at Glendowie for a number of years. We expect he will fit seamlessly into the running of the school and are very much looking forward to having him rejoin our team.
Exciting times ahead for two of our staff who will go on maternity leave early in Term 3. Mrs Annie Aspden and Mrs Nathalie Smith are expecting babies around the same time in September. A huge congratulations goes to both ladies and their families. We wish both Annie and Nathalie healthy pregnancies and a joyous start to their next chapter with newborns.
A reminder that we will be having a teacher only day on Monday 24th April. Students will start Term 2 on Wednesday 26th April (after ANZAC Day). Staff will be spending the teacher only day on 24th undertaking professional development.

Upgrades to the School Site
Many of you will have noticed that we are currently doing some improvements at the front of the school. It has been lovely to see the shaded area under the trees getting much more use now that students can sit on the new turf. You will have noticed that we have also tidied up the garden areas. A scorched earth approach was needed for the gardens at the front of the school, which will mean it will be a while until some of the hedges will come into their own. For now we have a much neater and tidier feel.
It is important that shared spaces look good and feel good. The importance of the way our learning environments look and make us feel is well established, as is the way that spaces can positively affect well-being.
A big thank you goes to one of our parents – Richard from the Property Crew. He and his team have done the recent landscaping work and we appreciate the level of professional engagement from Richard. I highly recommend him for all your landscaping needs.
During week two of next term we'll have an artist in residence – Jonny4Hire. Jonny is a mural artist who has worked all over the world and will be painting the brick ball wall near the entrance to the school, which is currently looking very plain. On the side that faces the road he will paint a map of our school as it is currently not that obvious to visitors – and some parents – where everything is. On the face that points toward the school he will paint a Glendowie landscape that includes learner profile traits from our PYP curriculum. We will encourage teachers to bring their classes out to watch Jonny work. Jonny’s visit will be a great chance to see a real life artist at work.
Finally, I wish everyone a restful and safe school holiday break.
